In Genesis 1:28, the command of God is to ‘be fruitful and to multiply’. In the Old Testament tradition virginity had no values. The status of a virgin was equal to that of a barren woman. Virginity in the Old Testament is a symbol of crisis and condemnation. Prophet Jeremiah condemned virginity who considered it as a curse (Jer 16:1-9). The daughter of Jephthah mourned for her virginity (Jud 1:37).
