3rd Week of Advent (19th December, 2018)

First Reading: Jdg 13:2-7, 24-25a (Birth of Samson)
Gospel: Lk 1:5-25 (John the Baptist’s birth announced)

In the first reading from the judges, we listen to the verses where the angel of the lord appeared to the wife of Manoah and announces the birth of Samson.

Samson was born as the son of Manoah whose wife was considered barren till then. Samson’s mission is to begin to rescue Israel from the Philistines.

As we move to the Gospel, something very similar happens. Zachariah and his wife Elizabeth who lived a holy life as per the Commandments, were childless.

The angel of the Lord appears to Zachariah and said that Elizabeth will bear a son who will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his Mother’s womb and to name him John.

However, Zachariah was sceptical, because of their age. Angel Gabriel informed that since Zachariah did not believe, he will be silent till what the angel said happens. Zachariah was dump since then. When Zachariah informed this to Elizabeth, she was happy that she will no more be blamed for being barren.

And this son is later referred as John the Baptist.

There are instances in our lives where we desire for something and pray to God that we want it but with a question mark in our minds.

If we take the example of Zachariah, even though he and Elizabeth were living a very holy life, at that crucial moment Zachariah was doubtful and the consequences he had to go through. In our lives too, when the will of God is not accepted with complete obedience, we will be losers rather than gainers.

Let this season bring in a complete faith in the lord so that the will of God happens in our lives. Amen.
