In Obedience to Commandments

Octave of Christmas (29th December, 2018)

First Reading: 1 Jn 2:3-11 (God is light)
Gospel: Lk 2:22-35 (My eyes have seen your salvation)

In Luke’s gospel today, Joseph and Mary the parents of Jesus decided to consecrate the first born to the lord as per the Jewish custom founded by Moses.

There was a man by name Simeon who was an upright man and guided by the holy spirit, approached Jesus and taking the baby in his hands blessed God and did say that he the servant God could leave this world in peace. This was a revelation that he got through the holy spirit that until he sees Jesus, he wouldn’t see death.

Mary and Joseph were wonder-struck at what had been happening. Simeon blessed the parents of Jesus; and to mother Mary, predicted the destiny of Jesus.

When we are heading for something good and following the guidelines of the commandments, we too will experience people like Simeon who will come into our lives and reveal the secrets through the holy spirit and enlighten us. When we go through the words that Simeon used in the gospel today it cannot be from a normal human being but it can only be from a soul who is enlightened by the holy spirit. As we go through the first reading John says that obeying the commandments of God and living like the kind of life as Christ lived, we can be sure that we are in God. Obedience to the commandments is what Joseph and Mary is showing us today by their lives.

Are we in obedience to the commandments that Jesus has taught us and Jesus lived by? So that we live in the light and not in darkness. Amen.
