New life in the Holy Spirit

Feast of the Day: Mary, Mother of God

First Reading: Num 6:22-27
Second Reading: Gal 4:4-7
Gospel: Lk 2:16-21

In today’s gospel from Luke, the Shepherds come back to visit baby Jesus, the Holy Family and glorifies Jesus. This is a revelation which is given to the shepherds.

Shepherds are generally considered as people who do not have much of conventional education. But what they really have is the wisdom which is given by God through the Holy Spirit.

As mentioned in many times in the Bible:

Luke 6:20 has “blessed are the poor”; to that Matthew adds “inspirit” is seen to be of great importance. This phrase does not appear in the Old Testament, but Psalm 34:18 it comes close. All these means that it is far more important to have the Divine wisdom rather than the conventional learning.

The verses continue that Mary pondered all these thoughts in her mind.

At the end of the Gospel today it is about the circumcision of Jesus on the 8th day. In the old Testament days, circumcision was being done which is equal to the baptism in the new testament. Which means, before Jesus came, John the Baptist did the baptism in water. When Jesus came ,he did it through the Holy Spirit . However, Jesus was baptised on the 8th day.

I think, for us Catholics, it is very important that we continue to observe child baptism.

After baptism, it’s a new life in the holy spirit, so also is the new year being born, let it be a new life for all of us.

We have our beloved mother Mary with us on this Auspicious day of the SOLEMNITY OF THE MOTHER OF GOD to intercede for us. Amen.
