Let’s do Homage to our Lord

Christmas Tide (6th January, 2019)

Feast of the Day: Epiphany of the Lord

First Reading: Is 60:1-6
Second Reading: Eph 3:2-3, 5-6
Gospel: Mt 2:1-12

The Gospel from Mathew is about the visit of the wise men to King Herod on the lookout for the new born baby Jesus. The wise men informed Herod that The Prophecy is being fulfilled and the baby will become the king of the Jews. They were following the star that will guide them to Jesus.

As this would raise a challenge to the king ship of Herod, he wanted to know the whereabouts of the new-born so that Herod too could do ‘homage.’

The wise men travelled till the star stopped, where Jesus was born. They knelt down in front of the baby and mother Mary and did homage.

They offered gifts – Gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Since the wise men were warned in their dreams that Herod’s intentions were cruel, they took a different way to return.

While we ponder, we realise that the wise men travelled great distances to do Him homage and to present the gifts they carried with them. While on their return, they took a safe route. Once we do the homage to the Lord, we will be guided in different routes which are safe.

The gifts brought where:

Gold – signifying that Jesus is King.
Frankincense – symbolically telling us that Jesus is the Lord
Myrrh – representing that Jesus is human.

All these three feelings should come to our mind when we do homage to the Lord during a Holy Eucharist or Adoration.

Last but not the least, the defeat of Evil over Good: Herod was all powerful a king, but so powerless in front of a baby Jesus and the Almighty.

In our personal reflections, let us pray to the Lord to overcome our evil thoughts with divine ideals and do homage to the holy one for all what he has done, doing ….and will do for us. Amen.
