Christmas Tide (10th January, 2019)
First Reading: 1 Jn 4:19-5:4
Gospel: Lk 4:14-22
In the first reading today, God is speaking to us through John about the love of God and loving God. That is to say, “I love God and hate my brother is a lie.”
How can one love an unseen God when he cannot love his brother?
When we obey someone out of love, that is the true love. We obey God’s commandments because we truly love God. We can win over this world only by our faith.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus was guided by the holy spirit to Galilee to accomplish what prophet Isaiah had foretold.
What a way the holy spirit is doing the job!
As Jesus read the scroll, in the synagogue on the Sabbath day:
“The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me.
He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight,
to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour.”
All the eyes in the synagogue were on Jesus. HE said:
“This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen”
All the people were astonished by the words of wisdom from Jesus.
The presence of the holy spirit made all the difference. It was this spirit that lead Jesus to the synagogue and he was given the scroll to read and the reading was about the person who was reading it.
The ways of the holy spirit are unique and to accomplish certain missions of the Lord in a particular way.
Let’s pray that the holy spirit works wonders with us too and let the Paraclete take control of us. Amen.
