Let us be the new wine-skins

2nd Week of Ordinary Time (21st January, 2019)

First Reading: Heb 5:1-10
Gospel: Mk 2:18-22

In the Gospel of Mark today, Jesus is being asked why is that the pharisees and the disciples of John the Baptist fast while the disciples of Jesus are not fasting.

For which Jesus’s reply was that the attendants of the bridegroom will celebrate when the bridegroom is still with them and once the bridegroom leaves, they would fast.

Jesus continues to compare that no one will stitch an unshrunk cloth with an old cloak because it will spoil the cloak. Also, Jesus talks about storing new wine in old wine skin. If we do that then the old wine-skin will burst and the wine will be wasted.

When we ponder, we get to know that a change is not easily accepted. We blindly stick to the rituals and traditions most of the time without knowing the reality. When Jesus is with us, it is a time to celebrate. We call the holy mass the Eucharistic Celebration. That is the time Jesus is with us. And good Friday, we fast…on that day he left us.

We do not buy a cotton T- Shirt which is unshrunk or even if we have to buy, we would choose the next size so that it will be fitting to us after a wash and later.

We should use the wisdom to choose what is really right.

In the context of the wine-skin, we have to renew ourselves to receive Jesus the new wine or else we will lose Jesus and he can no more stay with us.

As we pray today, let us submit ourselves to the Lord to renew ourselves as the new wine skin so that we do not loose our Savior Jesus. Amen.
