6th Week of Ordinary Time (22nd February, 2019)
First Reading: 1 Pet 5:1-4
Gospel: Mt 16:13-19
In today’s Gospel of Matthew, Jesus asks his disciples to find who do the people say that the Son of man is?
They reply that some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.
Jesus puts the same question to them.
Then Simon Peter replies that you are the Christ, son of the living God.
Jesus responds that this was revealed to Peter by the heavenly father.
And Peter was then given the position of being the rock on which the church will be built and the key of heaven will be given to Peter.
In yesterday s Gospel we hear Peter being referred to as Satan for thinking like man does and also, we know that in a few days time, the same Peter will betray Jesus thrice.
It is in fact the making of Peter by these errors that he commits and still continues as the rock.
In St. Peters basilica, the wooden chair which is believed to have been the chair of St. Peter still exists. The feast of it is being celebrated today. It is a celebration to commemorate the special mission of Peter, the first pope and his successors.
We know that Peter was just an ordinary man, not a scholar. He made many mistakes still He was given the highest responsibility by Jesus.
The ordinary will be made extra ordinary in Christ. Amen.
