Death, where is your victory?

16-year-old Rajalakshmi, a standard XI student in Tamil Nadu, India, was riding a bicycle with a lunch – box for her father daily labourer, when she was knocked down by a lorry. Both her legs were crushed. She was rushed to the Government hospital.

Just before she succumbed to her injuries, though she was writhing in agony. She made three requests.

  1. That her parents stop quarrelling and live in harmony.
  2. Her eyes be donated to her cousin Bhuvana.
  3. The Collector, Ms. Kannagi, who had helped her with text – books, be called so that she could express her gratitude. She died before the collector arrived.

On the threshold of death, her thoughts were not on herself. There was no remorse or regret, no bitterness or complaint. Her last breaths and final heartbeats were for others.

Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your string? 1 Cor 15: 55

Ask God for the grace to deepen our understanding of the mysteries of life and death, and to give us a balanced attitude toward both.
